Cheryl Somers, MA, LPC. Owner/Director, Colorado Teen Therapy
Early in my career when I was a middle school teacher, I discovered that teenagers are fascinating, interesting and complicated. I became a therapist because I believe teens need and deserve support and guidance that honors the struggles that are unique to this age. I help teens who struggle with anxiety, perfectionism and low self-esteem develop a solid plan to move from stuck and overwhelmed to feeling more confident and in control.
I do my best work with teens who are avoiding school or other difficult situations, withdrawing from family and friends, and feeling paralyzed by anxiety by helping them see their strengths more clearly to feel empowered and capable of tackling the parts of life that feel overwhelming.
Through my work as a middle school teacher, school counselor, and teen therapist, I have gained a wealth of experience and training that enable me to work well with teenagers:
• I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado.
• I have a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colorado at Denver.
• I have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
• I have specialized training in self-harm and suicide prevention.
I love working with teens to...
...manage anxiety and improve their sense of control by helping them create relaxation habits, make shifts in negative thinking and self-talk, and identify and embrace their own strengths. My goal is to promote growth and confidence within your teen so that they will have the skills and confidence to thrive during these teen years and into adulthood.
When I'm not working with clients...
I'm at home with my husband and two daughters, reading, watching football and doing my best to avoid cooking! I love all kinds of books and I enjoy learning new things. And I definitely head up to the mountains to camp, ski or hike whenever I can.
