Meet Our Team

Lauren Waag, LSW

Licensed Social Worker in Colorado

I first fell in love with social work as a freshman in college and haven’t stopped loving it since. My counseling experience comes from working in a variety of settings including at a behavioral school, forensic hospital and an inpatient psychiatric hospital with adolescents. My passion is walking with teenagers on their journey of self-discovery and providing tools to help them and their family along the way. I believe it is important to have resources to cope with day-to-day stressors or the big stressors like choosing a college or dealing with major life events in order to move through these events in the best way possible. My focus is working with adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidality, and trauma.

My favorite therapeutic modalities to pull from in sessions involve Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In all of these I help teens connect to their own experience and begin to build skills so that the teen can help themselves in the future.

Ashley Jara, MA, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

I was drawn to counseling as many of us are, with a desire to help others.  Through the years I’ve been lucky to work with teens and parents in a variety of middle schools, high schools, outpatient clinics and non-profits.   My focus has consistently been around helping establish and maintain healthy relationships, building and using positive coping skills, mindfulness practices, client advocacy, and an intentional concentration on the therapeutic relationship with my clients.

The counseling theories that I utilize the most are solution-focused and person centered, with an ability to incorporate mindful movement and play when and where it fits with clients.   I am a huge nature lover, runner, yoga teacher, and dog lover in my spare time and love helping others to connect to their true and most authentic self.

Alexandra Papa, M.A., LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

I wanted to be a counselor since my high school internship with an elementary school counselor. I am a Colorado native that moved across the country for my high school years so I empathize with those who go through significant transitions. I have been a camp counselor, a mentor, a tutor, a school therapist and school counselor working with high school and elementary students. My focus has been on helping kids create attainable goals and work on their anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I have facilitated small groups such as Smart-Girls that focus on coping and anti-bullying skills.

The counseling theories I use most often are solution focused and strengths based. I love creating interventions that incorporate a teen's interests including art and play therapy. Many kids and teens are not ready for talk therapy so I like to include other engaging options around play to help a teen solve their problems. I would love to work with your teen to help them focus on their strengths and together conquer their challenges.

In my free time I ski, workout, walk my dog Murphy Sue and spend time with my husband, Tyler, family and friends

Megan Yarnall, MA, NLC, MFTC

Registered Psychotherapist & Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate

I have worked with teenagers since I was a teenager myself! Starting out as a camp counselor, I have always taken an experiential approach to teaching and working with children and teens. I enjoy supporting teens in navigating the rocky path of figuring out who they are and what they want to do. My specialty is working with teens who confront perfectionism, anxiety, and disabilities, as well as motivation, identity, and behavior issues.

After my own transformative experiences hiking, climbing, and backpacking, I knew that I wanted to combine these experiential learning opportunities with helping people. As a narrative therapist, I believe that we can decide how much power the problems in our lives have; learning strength, endurance, and perseverance through activities such as backpacking and climbing helps us choose our preferred stories over our problem stories. I’m also particularly interested in the intersections between nature and therapy, and how we can use those to understand our identities.

Jamie Doak, MA, LPC

Nationally Certified Counselor & Licensed Professional Counselor

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and over the years have taught English and writing in grades 8-12. I loved helping my students connect with characters in the novel we read and learn to identify, write, and sometimes, take control and change their own stories. I noticed that I was spending my planning period, my lunch break and hours after school talking with my students and helping them navigate their world- and that I enjoyed this way more than grading papers or lesson planning! I made the switch to counseling and have spent the past few years as a counselor in a high school working with students and their parents to figure out how to deal with the inevitable difficulties of being a teen.

It's normal for teens to struggle- and it's important that they learn healthy ways to cope with stress and doubt along the way. I specialize in working with middle and high school girls who struggle with stress, anxiety or perfectionism. I believe it is vitally important for young women to recognize that their worth is not determined by their performance, their strength is not measured in trophies and their beauty is not judged by the media. I would love to work with your teen and help her shed the pressures of who she thinks she's supposed to be in order to become the strong young woman she was meant to be.

Cheryl Somers, MA, LPC

Owner/Executive Director

I love working with teenagers!  I spent the early years of my career as a middle school teacher, then a school counselor, and now a teen therapist.  I opened Colorado Teen Therapy to give teens and parents a place devoted specifically to their unique needs.  I believe teens will only be open to support once they trust that they are being heard without judgment and accepted just as they are.  My approach to counseling is centered around helping teens see their own strengths and their resiliency, and then using that insight to make changes in the ways they see themselves and interact with others.  My favorite moments in therapy are when teens tell me they used what they learned in session to successfully advocate for themselves or to resolve a conflict with  a friend or to treat themselves with more compassion.  I love celebrating the growth that I see in my clients!
