Michael Heckendorn, M.Ed., NCC

National Certified Counselor

My beginnings started in the small Northern Michigan town of Charlevoix where I was drawn into the idea of helping people. I’ve always had a passion for working with adolescent and young adults. It is the trickiest time to navigate one’s own identity and to develop very important skills that will impact their future.

For caregivers, this time of life can be the most difficult and confusing. The delicate balance between independence, self-concept, self-motivation, social conformity, risk-taking, and self-regulation is hard to understand and accomplish. This is why I became a counselor – to help adolescents and their families on the challenging road of self-discovery, healing, and purpose.

Megan Yarnall, MA, NLC, MFTC

Registered Psychotherapist & Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate

I have worked with teenagers since I was a teenager myself! Starting out as a camp counselor, I have always taken an experiential approach to teaching and working with children and teens. I enjoy supporting teens in navigating the rocky path of figuring out who they are and what they want to do. My specialty is working with teens who confront perfectionism, anxiety, and disabilities, as well as motivation, identity, and behavior issues.

After my own transformative experiences hiking, climbing, and backpacking, I knew that I wanted to combine these experiential learning opportunities with helping people. As a narrative therapist, I believe that we can decide how much power the problems in our lives have; learning strength, endurance, and perseverance through activities such as backpacking and climbing helps us choose our preferred stories over our problem stories. I’m also particularly interested in the intersections between nature and therapy, and how we can use those to understand our identities.

Jamie Doak, MA, LPCC

Nationally Certified Counselor & Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and over the years have taught English and writing in grades 8-12. I loved helping my students connect with characters in the novel we read and learn to identify, write, and sometimes, take control and change their own stories. I noticed that I was spending my planning period, my lunch break and hours after school talking with my students and helping them navigate their world- and that I enjoyed this way more than grading papers or lesson planning! I made the switch to counseling and have spent the past few years as a counselor in a high school working with students and their parents to figure out how to deal with the inevitable difficulties of being a teen.

It's normal for teens to struggle- and it's important that they learn healthy ways to cope with stress and doubt along the way. I specialize in working with middle and high school girls who struggle with stress, anxiety or perfectionism. I believe it is vitally important for young women to recognize that their worth is not determined by their performance, their strength is not measured in trophies and their beauty is not judged by the media. I would love to work with your teen and help her shed the pressures of who she thinks she's supposed to be in order to become the strong young woman she was meant to be.
