Meet Our Team

Kate Ketchum, MA, LPCC

Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate

I have always loved working with adolescents, ever since I was an adolescent myself… as a nanny, camp counselor, mentor and small group leader. As a therapist, it is my hope to remind people of their value by being fully present, genuinely curious and making them feel heard and safe. I think the teen years are wildly beautiful and difficult to navigate at times. These years are crucial for identity development and it is my great joy to support and be with teenagers on this journey. My therapeutic approach focuses on integration. I like to think of each person as a mosaic. Each containing many broken pieces that, when integrated, create something beautiful and whole. I enjoy using narrative therapy as an avenue to explore each person’s unique story and take ownership of their choices and life. I also believe in the power of play as a means of expression and symbolism. Many times, it can be difficult to communicate or process our experiences with words. Play allows for therapy to go beyond words and is both a fun and powerful integrative approach to healing. Finally, I enjoy working with a systemic lens to help mend, build and sustain relationships. Our families are the first system we enter into and learn from, and I believe deeply in creating a safe place for families to dialogue, learn and grow together.

In my free time I love time with my husband, friends and family. I love running, skiing, hiking, camping, traveling, yoga and almost anything that involves being outside and adventuring. I am also a reading fanatic (fun fact: BIG Harry Potter fan), an avid podcast listener, and lover of coffee and puns.

Lauren Waag, MSW LSW

Licensed Social Worker in Colorado

I first fell in love with social work as a freshman in college and haven’t stopped loving it since. My counseling experience comes from working in a variety of settings including at a behavioral school, forensic hospital and an inpatient psychiatric hospital with adolescents. My passion is walking with teenagers on their journey of self-discovery and providing tools to help them and their family along the way. I believe it is important to have resources to cope with day-to-day stressors or the big stressors like choosing a college or dealing with major life events in order to move through these events in the best way possible. My focus is working with adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidality, and trauma.

My favorite therapeutic modalities to pull from in sessions involve Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In all of these I help teens connect to their own experience and begin to build skills so that the teen can help themselves in the future.

Ashley Jara, MA, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

I was drawn to counseling as many of us are, with a desire to help others.  Through the years I’ve been lucky to work with teens and parents in a variety of middle schools, high schools, outpatient clinics and non-profits.   My focus has consistently been around helping establish and maintain healthy relationships, building and using positive coping skills, mindfulness practices, client advocacy, and an intentional concentration on the therapeutic relationship with my clients.

The counseling theories that I utilize the most are solution-focused and person centered, with an ability to incorporate mindful movement and play when and where it fits with clients.   I am a huge nature lover, runner, yoga teacher, and dog lover in my spare time and love helping others to connect to their true and most authentic self.

Alexandra Papa, M.A., LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

I wanted to be a counselor since my high school internship with an elementary school counselor. I am a Colorado native that moved across the country for my high school years so I empathize with those who go through significant transitions. I have been a camp counselor, a mentor, a tutor, a school therapist and school counselor working with high school and elementary students. My focus has been on helping kids create attainable goals and work on their anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I have facilitated small groups such as Smart-Girls that focus on coping and anti-bullying skills.

The counseling theories I use most often are solution focused and strengths based. I love creating interventions that incorporate a teen's interests including art and play therapy. Many kids and teens are not ready for talk therapy so I like to include other engaging options around play to help a teen solve their problems. I would love to work with your teen to help them focus on their strengths and together conquer their challenges.

In my free time I ski, workout, walk my dog Murphy Sue and spend time with my husband, Tyler, family and friends

Please note: Alexandra is not currently taking new clients.

Cheryl Somers, MA, LPC

Owner/Executive Director

I love working with teenagers!  I spent the early years of my career as a middle school teacher, then a school counselor, and now a teen therapist.  I opened Colorado Teen Therapy to give teens and parents a place devoted specifically to their unique needs.  I believe teens will only be open to support once they trust that they are being heard without judgment and accepted just as they are.  My approach to counseling is centered around helping teens see their own strengths and their resiliency, and then using that insight to make changes in the ways they see themselves and interact with others.  My favorite moments in therapy are when teens tell me they used what they learned in session to successfully advocate for themselves or to resolve a conflict with  a friend or to treat themselves with more compassion.  I love celebrating the growth that I see in my clients!
